Celery Juice: Are There Really Any Health Benefits?

Celery juice is having a moment and is taking over social media everywhere. While I’m all for putting a vegetable in the spotlight, the claims associated with the celery juice trend are far fetched and not backed by science or really any logical evidence.

The Claims

The celery juice trend claims to benefit mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health. The fad was started by a man known as the ‘Medical Medium’. The Medical Medium is a psychic who hears about many medical conditions and ideas that the medical community has not yet discovered. As you scroll through his website and the purported health claims of celery juice he often mentions that the medical community is not yet aware of these findings.

The Medical Medium encourages his followers to drink 16oz of celery juice each morning on an empty stomach to relieve them of their ailments, including autoimmune diseases and mental health conditions, and anything ranging from acne and strep throat to bipolar disorder and memory loss.

The Medial Medium claims that celery juice starves pathogens with undiscovered mineral salts called cluster salts. He says these salts flush out toxins, pathogens, viruses, and bacteria and boosts acid in the stomach and to improve digestion and heal the liver.

Is celery juice meant to drink straight or can you mix anything else in?

The 'Medical Medium' encourages drinking celery juice alone. However, it's important to remember that the Medical Medium gets his 'knowledge' from voices he hears and does not have medical training or qualifications to give nutrition or medical advice. 

Most people don't enjoy the taste of straight celery juice so adding in flavors like ginger or other fruits and veggies can not only add more nutrients but also make it more palatable. I recommend adding celery to a smoothie with other fruits, veggies, healthy fats, and proteins.

Are there any real health benefits?

Like, many other fruits and vegetables, celery contains antioxidants and phytochemicals which may help reduce both inflammation and disease risk. Unfortunately, there is nothing inherently special about celery to make it the magic cure-all the trend makes it out to be.

Celery contains fiber (when consumed whole or in a smoothie, but a juice removes the pulp and fiber), vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, potassium, and vitamin C. Including celery in your diet can be a healthy choice. Celery juice itself has not been studied and the claims behind the trend are not supported by science.

Is it unhealthy to eat (or drink) celery on a daily basis?

Eating celery on a daily basis is not unhealthy but including a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet is just as beneficial if not more than the quantity you include.

Should anyone avoid celery juice?

Patients on blood thinning medications (warfarin) should not try celery juice due to the concentrated source of vitamin K.

Aside from “juicing,” how else can you incorporate celery into a healthy diet?

I recommend eating celery whole to benefit from the fiber content. Most people don't consume enough fiber and celery is a great way to add flavor to dishes while boosting fiber intake. Celery is a great addition to stir fries, soups and stews, salads, grain dishes, casseroles and more. Celery, carrot, and onion is the classic French mirepoix which provides a delicious flavor base to a variety of dishes. Try adding celery to a smoothie with other fruits and veggies or eat it plain with a scoop of peanut butter and topped with raisins.
